Women's History Month 2026
First Hand: 25 Years Later

Twenty-five years ago, an online publication by the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women and Interministerial Women's Secretariat shared the untold stories of PEI women's arts, crafts, and culture of the twentieth century.

"First Hand" was researched and written by public historians in modules focused on Mi'kmaw baskets, photography, visual arts, quilting, rug hooking, and literary writing.

The Chairs Circle for Gender Equality invites you to revisit this project a quarter-century later on Friday, October 2, at the Faculty Lounge at UPEI. Reception, demonstrations, and displays from 5:00 p.m. with a panel discussion beginning at 6:00 to consider what has changed for women and non-binary artists and artisans in the last 25 years. On the panel will be author and Elder Julie Pellissier-Lush, musician Tiffany Liu, and visual multimedia artist Monica Lacey.

Supported by InnovationPEI Community Cultural Partnerships and presented as a Charlottetown Art Night through CreativePEI, supported by the City of Charlottetown.

Women's History Month 2025

In 2025, the Chairs Circle hosted a workshop "Animating Herstory," highlighting a timeline of 50 years of work for gender equality in PEI.

The workshop was part of October 2025 events celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women and included a 60-foot display of historical highlights, intergenerational facilitation and support by Felicia Carey and her family, and hands-on participation by Chairs Circle members and friends.

Women's History Month 2024

To celebrate 2024 Women's History Month, the Chairs Circle for Gender Equality hosted workshops on “Bringing to Light Hidden Heritage.”

Using the model of the Black Women's History Project created for Island schools, the workshop explored ways to deepen our understandings of heritage and present hidden histories for our communities. The workshop brought together educators and members of the public to share more diverse stories of our past.

Women's History Month 2023

In 2023, the Chairs Circle hosted its first events. The PEI 150: Women Making History events welcomed locals and visitors to two dynamic showcase events to celebrate 150 years of PEI women’s contributions to Island culture and history.

A day-long program featured hands-on,
participatory workshops on women’s history and a public reception that brought to life women’s history with entertainment by local performers and interactive displays highlighting exciting provincial history projects. Workshops highlighted the Black Women's History Project, including a tour of the historic Bog community, and 100 years of gender being removed as a barrier to voting.

A gala reception celebrated the inception of the Chairs Circle for Gender Equality.
